Red River Rising Welcomes Newcomers to Cheer for Valour FC

Immigration Partnership Winnipeg (IPW) recently connected with Red River Rising, the supporters’ group of Winnipeg’s professional soccer team, Valour FC, as part of their outreach to welcome newcomers into the city’s growing sports culture. Thanks to Red River Rising’s co-president, Kristin Laidlaw, IPW staff joined colleagues from the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg (SPCW) at Valour FC’s home match against York United FC on August 17 at Princess Auto Stadium. The group had the chance to experience first-hand how Red River Rising creates a lively, energetic atmosphere in support of Winnipeg’s team.

During the game, IPW’s Kris and Hiwot, along with SPCW’s Rebecca, joined fans in witnessing the passion of Red River Rising as they waved flags, beat drums, chanted, and sang to lift the spirits of both the team and the hometown crowd. The evening also marked a special milestone for Valour FC captain Raphael “Raph” Ohin, who played his 100th match for the club that night. Reflecting on the achievement, Ohin shared with the Winnipeg Free Press: “This is the city that gave me something… from my first game… all the way till my 100th game.”

Founded in 2018, Red River Rising has been building a vibrant soccer culture in Winnipeg while also giving back to the community through initiatives such as charity drives and clean-up events. Beyond sports, Laidlaw emphasizes that supporting Valour FC is an opportunity for newcomers to connect with fellow Winnipeggers, practice their English, and enjoy an affordable, family-friendly outing in the city’s south end.

Although the match against York United ended in a scoreless draw, the sense of community and excitement in the stands made the evening a win for everyone involved. Red River Rising continues to welcome people of all ages, genders, sexual orientations, and cultural backgrounds to join their group, whether by attending games at Princess Auto Stadium, watching away matches together at Elephant & Castle Pub and Restaurant, or participating in their local charity initiatives. For newcomers looking to build friendships, share their love of soccer, and become part of Winnipeg’s community spirit, Red River Rising offers the perfect place to start.
