Volunteer Commitment

The NEYCW is a voluntary youth body under the Immigration Partnership Winnipeg (IPW). Members are expected to commit their time and effort to the council’s activities without monetary compensation. IPW is a Local Immigration Partnership that fosters collaboration at the community level to improve the settlement and integration of newcomers. While this is a volunteer position, the experience and skills gained, along with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community, are invaluable. We are looking for dedicated individuals who are passionate about making a difference and who are ready to commit to this rewarding journey.

Commitment Duration

Members of the Advisory Committee are expected to commit for a term of two years, subject to review. General Committee members are encouraged to commit for at least one year to ensure continuity and effectiveness in achieving the council’s goals.

Structure

  • Advisory Committee: 5-7 members, including two Co-Chairs and three to five Directors.
  • General Committee: Up to 25 members.

Duties

  • Attend monthly meetings.
  •         Engage with various organizations and governmental bodies to represent newcomer youth interests.

Mandate

The NEYCW aims to engage newcomer youth in Winnipeg and represent their voices in decision-making across various service provision and policy-making areas and within their own communities.

Purpose

  • Represent Winnipeg newcomer youth on issues that matter to them.
  • Encourage and enable newcomer youth to engage with the community and different levels of government.
  • Promote mutual respect and understanding among youth from different ethno-cultural backgrounds.
  • Expose newcomer youth to the history of Indigenous Peoples and involve them in the reconciliation process.
  • Help social and settlement organizations make informed decisions for newcomer youth services.
  • Assist all levels of government in understanding and prioritizing newcomer youth service needs.
  • Build capacity within ethno-cultural communities and increase awareness of newcomer youth potentials, needs, and challenges.
  • Extend the mandate of IPW in creating awareness about successful settlement and integration of youth.
  • Foster positive relationships between law enforcement and newcomer youth.
